Eczema refers to an inflammation of the skin that causes itching, and redness in the affected area. Often you will hear doctors use the term dermatitis to explain this condition as well. Eczema or dermatitis is one of the most common kinds of skin complaints. It affects people of all ages and the symptoms of eczema can start at anytime.

The most common symptoms of eczema are rashes on the skin. They are extremely itchy and uncomfortable. Studies have shown that child eczema or infant eczema is become quite common nowadays.

Although there is no treatment for eczema, a lot can be done to prevent eczema and avoid flare-ups.

what to do

wash

A regular skincare routine for your baby is crucial to prevent/calm eczema. The most important step is to bath your baby regularly in luke warm water. Do not let your baby stay in the water for too long as this can dry the skin out. Use mild and gentle washes and shampoos and products that do not contain SLS, Parabens or Petrochemicals. Adding a little oil to the bath can make it more moisturising.

Ensure that the skin is completely rinsed before patting dry with a soft natural towel. Excessive dying and towelling can irritate the skin.

moisturise

Moisturise your baby’s skin with a cream that does not contain harsh preservatives such as parabens which can irritate eczema. Vitamin E, Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba oil are effective natural ingredients to soothe, calm, nourish and moisturise dry itchy skin. Moisturising can greatly help avoid your baby from scratching. Eczema causes the skin to itch; too much scratching can harm the surface and too often can lead to a secondary bacterial infection at the site.

massage

Rub oil into the affected areas with firm, gliding strokes. At sleep time, give baby’s skin an extra moisturising boost by massaging baby oil which does not contain parabens or petrochemicals. Do not massage the skin if it is broken.
