The first signs of teething usually begin a few months before the first tooth appears so you will need to look for particular symptoms to ensure that this is actually the cause.

Signs of teething are:

  • Restlessness, irritability and disturbed sleep patterns
  • Sore, red gums
  • Flushed cheeks
  • Loss of appetite
  • A slight rise in temperature (but not above 39c, which indicates a fever)
  • Excessive dribbling
  • A sudden desire to chew anything they can lay their hand on!
  • An urge to bite

The skin on your baby’s cheeks and chin will become dry, chapped and sore due to excessive dryness.

what to do

wash

Cleanse baby’s cheeks using a soft organic face cloth dipped in luke warm water. Pat cheeks and chin dry do not wipe or drag the cloth as this could irritate the sensitive areas.

moisturise

Make sure the skin on the cheeks and chin are completely dry and apply a barrier cream to them to form a waterproof barrier between the skin and saliva.

massage

Massaging oil sparingly into the baby’s cheeks and chin overnight can help to soothe and calm the skin. The oil will also moisturise chapped skin making it smooth and comforting for baby.
